Why this research matters?
Small businesses make up 99.9% of all UK businesses, employing 16.9 million people and generating £2.8 trillion a year, 51% of the UK's total business turnover.
Yet sobering figures from ONS data shows that around 38% of businesses that start today will still be trading in five years.
Most research still treats business performance and founder wellbeing as two separate stories. On one side we read about rising pressure of costs and on the other we learn about the isolation and long hours.
This group of businesses and their founders - often less exciting than fast scaling start-ups appealing to investors and less reliable than medium sized organisations, are often left wearing the many hats to either sink or swim.
This study asks a different question: what happens when we look at them together - and what would it take for more founders to move from just surviving to genuinely thriving?
